About Tiruvottiyur

Tiruvottiyur, also known as Thiruvottriyur or TVT, is a well-populated residential neighbourhood of North Chennai. It is the part of the administration of the Great Chennai Corporation. It is under the jurisdiction of the Ambattur division. Being close to Parrys and Chennai Central, the region is a rapidly developing residential area. As a matter of fact, Tiruvottiyur is one of the oldest accommodations by the sea and is surrounded by a lot of industrial and trading activities. A massive industrial establishment around this locality has made it one of the most heavily populated parts of Chennai. Industries like Royal Enfield Motors, Greaves Cotton LTD, CPCL, SRF, Ashok Leyland, Ennore foundries, ETPS and many other small-scale industries have also supported and contributed to the growth and development of this locality. A major part of the population depends upon these industries for daily labour. Apart from manufacturing industries, the fishing industry has also well-established itself because of its proximity to the sea.

History of Tiruvottiyur

Tiruvottiyur has been the home to an ancient temple named Thyagaraja Temple. Being the part of the Paadal Petra Sthalangal, it is among the well-known and great Shiva temples in all over Tamil Nadu. Tiruvottiyur is a heaven on Earth for religious men and devotees as it has many temples located in and around the locality like Thiruvudai amman, Vaduvidai amman and kodivudai ammmans and Ambal vadivudaiyamman which is also well-known as sakthi temple. A temple named after a great saint is also located here called the Pattinathar temple which has an interesting story behind it. Once upon a time, Lord Shiva rewarded the saint with sugarcane saying that the part from which the sugarcane starts tasting sweet is the part where you find the Lord himself. When he reached the area of the sugarcane when it tasted sweet, his Samathi period began then itself. Renowned poets and writers have visited this temple such as Appar, Sundarar, Gnana Sambandhar, Thyagayyar, Vallalar, Valmiki, Kambar, Adi Shankara and many more.

Valluvar Kottam Temple is one of the known monuments of Chennai. It is dedicated to Saint Thiruvalluvar, a classical Tamil poet and philosopher. The architecture of Valluvar Kottam is somewhat similar to the construction of the temple chariot in Thiruvarur. It is purely built in traditional Tamil style by the famous Tamil architect, V. Ganapati Sthapati. Being situated in the deepest point of the local lake, the temple stands baseless, that is, without the support of any pillars, making it a sight to behold.

The Thousand Lights mosque is one of the largest mosques of the country, spreading over three acres of land. The name of the mosque has a story behind it, where there was a requirement of thousand lights to illuminate the assembly hall of the mosque and thus, the mosque has been called the thousand lights mosques ever since. Built in 1810 by Nawab Umdat-ul-Umra, the mosques showcases medieval architectural style.

Thyagaraja Temple, which is also called as Vadivudai Amman Temple, is dedicated to the Hindu God, Lord Shiva. The temple is categorised as Paadal Petra Sthalam where the hymns of the famous Tamil Saint poets, Saiva Nayanars of the 7th century are well-recognised and admired. The temple is also closely related to the saint poet Sundarar and Pattinathar. The temple is administered and well-maintained by the Hindu Religious as well as the Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Being a part of Chennai, Tiruvottiyur is well connected through roadways and bus routes. Buses are operated throughout the city of Chennai and its localities and there are few services which connect other different parts of the state of Tamil Nadu. Not only buses, but there are other transportation facilities like rickshaws and autos connected to different parts of the city.

Tiruvottiyur has two rail stations; one at Tiruvottiyur itself and the other one are at Wimco Nagar. Other than that one can also avail rail routes and air routes through Chennai as well.
